On this page are some basics about magic, and religion, which are seperate; magical practioners or witches aren't always religious.  There is a breif summary of magic which anyone interested should find useful, too.

Pagans, Wiccans, witches?
The Wiccan faith is a religion categorised under Pagan beliefs.

The Wiccan Rede in simple terms is; 'If you harm none, do what you will.'  Obviously it is not possible to harm none, because whatever you do will harm someone else.  If you cast a spell for a money and then get a promotion, someone else has missed out.  There is the Wiccan Rede in longer form is here.  It is always advised never to cast magic on someone else, especially if they don't know about it.  Good intentions do not always equal good outcomes.

Witches are males and females who practise magic; use the power of will to make things happen.  Some witches have tools which are used and some may be displayed on an altar, if they choose to have one.

Magic - A Brief Summary

Magic is concentrating on natural energies, which may come from the elements, herbs, and crystals, and focusing these energies on your intent.  Visualising is important; visualise your desire manifesting, rather than the path to get there; in order to direct energies to achieve your desired outcome.

Magic can be performed without aids such as candles or incense, as magic is effecting change through the power of will, focusing and concentrating on your intent is directing energy to it and leading it to suffice.  Herbs, crystals and other things are used to increase the effectiveness of your magic, they work with you, not for you.  Visualising and being passionate and believing what you are doing is most important.

The basic principles for working your magic in accordance with the moon and its' phases are simple; when the moon is waning (when it's gettting smaller, going from a full moon to a new moon) it is appropriate to practice magic that would be for example; to rid your home or yourself of negative energies, things or feelings.  When the moon is waxing (when it's getting bigger, going from a new moon to a full moon) it would be appropriate to practice magic that would be for example; to gain money, friendships or a new job.

You should create a magical space in which to perform magical workings.  Visualise a protective sphere forming around you and your area, be sure to close it afterwards.

You can envoke the elements to assist you while you work, be sure to bid them farewell when you are finished.  You could use physical things to help envoke the elements, such as lighting incense, then sprinkling water, lighting a candle and sprinking salt.

If you consider yourself to be religious, you may want to invite your desired God(s) or Goddess(s) to join you while you work also.  Be sure to bid everyone farewell before closing your circle, and you may want ot leave an offering on your altar as thanks.

Book of Shadows?
A book of shadows is similar to a diary that a witch may keep where they write plans for magical workings, and record spells and rituals.  We write down spells and rituals so we can refer back to them and repeat them.

Unlike Charmed, it's not a special book of rituals that are mega-powerful, although it could be sacred, to you.
